ICE Can Now Arrest at Schools, Churches
The Trump administration has dismantled long-standing policies that protected sensitive locations like schools and churches from immigration enforcement. Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman announced Tuesday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents would now be allowed to conduct arrests at these sites.
Potential Implications:
The policy change could discourage undocumented students from attending school or seeking higher education due to fear of arrest.
The shift risks eroding trust between immigrant communities and educational institutions, limiting access to essential resources. Read more»

Federal DEI Policies Eliminated Under Trump
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order revoking affirmative action policies and diversity requirements. It directs federal agencies to terminate existing DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) programs and compile lists of private companies, universities, and large foundations for potential investigations into their DEI practices. Webinar Addresses Higher Education Challenges for Native Students
The American Indian College Fund, the Brookings Institute, and the Institute for Higher Education Policy hosted a free webinar on January 15 to support the success of Native students in higher education.

The collaborating organizations first convened in June 2024 to identify factors contributing to a decline in Native American and Alaska Native student enrollment. Their resulting Report on Native Higher Education Success Strategies offers recommendations for Native organizations, policy groups, higher education institutions, tribes, legislators, and students. Professors Sue to Block Florida Anti-DEI Law
A collection of college and university professors in Florida are suing to challenge a 2023 state law prohibiting funding for public institutions' DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) programs. The lawsuit argues that the law, known as SB 266, infringes on academic freedom and free expression. Read more»
